Overview of Collection Services

General Trash Collection

Recycling Heavy Item &
Brush Collection

 

General Trash Collection

Trash Collection is based on your street address and is subject to change due to season and route schedule.  If you have any questions about when your scheduled trash pick-up is, call the Dept. of Public Services (DPS) at (989) 837-6900.

 

General Trash (Refuse) Collection Rules

Refuse is collected in cans, plastic bags, and refuse carts.
Cans & Plastic bags must be closed and weigh less than 50 pounds.
Refuse carts are wheeled trash bins which are purchased from the City and are available in 3 sizes:
  • 35 gallon at $35.00 each, for a 1-2 person household
  • 68 gallon at $45.00 each, for a 3-4 person household
  • 95 gallon at $50.00 each, for 4 or more person household
  • To order, send a check or money order payable to the City of Midland to:
            City Treasurer, 333 W. Ellsworth St.
             Allow one week for delivery

Recycling

Recycling is collected every other week on your regular refuse day.  Items are collected in a 14-gallon green recycling bin, which is provided at no charge by call DPS at (989) 837-6900.  There is a limit of two bins per household.

 

What's accepted and how to prepare it:

Newspapers, magazines, catalogs & telephone books
Includes glossy inserts & catalogs.
Place in a separate bin from containers.
Can also be tied or placed in a paper bag (no plastic bags).

 

Corrugated cardboard & boxes
Flatten, cut to less than 3 X 3 feet.
No pizza boxes.
Place in a separate bin from containers.

Boxboard
Flatten cereal, dry food & tissue boxes.
No glossy boxes such as frozen food.
No beverage cartons.
Remove liners & cellophane.
Place in a separate bin from containers.

#2 Plastic & Milk Jugs
Must be labeled #2 on the bottom.
Does not include oil or antifreeze containers.
Does not include plastic bags/ grocery bags.
Rinse and remove lids.
Place in a separate bin from paper

 

Aerosol Cans
Empty completely & remove outer caps.
Place in a separate bin from paper.

Glass, clear & colored
Rinse & remove lids.
Does not include plates, lightbulbs or mirrors.
Place in a separate bin from paper.

 

Aluminum & Food Cans
Includes cans, foil, pie plates and tin.
Rinse out all food.
Place in a separate bin from paper.

 

Recycling preparation tips:
  • Place recycling out by 8:00 a.m.
  • Rinse out all food residue from containers.
  • Put containers and paper in separate bins.
  • The green bins must be used for recycling to be collected.
  • Boxes are not to be used as containers.
    Cardboard and boxes must be flattened and cut to less than 3 x 3 feet.  Boxes not flattened will be collected only in the Heavy Item & Brush program.

Heavy Item & Brush Collection

Heavy Items and Brush are collected once per month.  Items can be placed at the curb on the Saturday preceding you scheduled collection Monday.  Check the map below or Call the DPS at (989)837-6900 with questions regarding your pick-up day or schedule.

 

Whole Boxes & Large Cardboard
Cardboard larger than 3x3 feet is considered a heavy item.
You can also recycle boxes and cardboard by flattening them and cutting to 3x3 feet or less

Furniture, Mattress & Carpeting
Less than 8 feet in length

Logs, cut branches, tree trimmings & brush
In lengths less than 8 feet. 
No service for land clearing.

Demolition , remodeling & building materials
Established residents only.

Moving boxes & appliances
Remove covers & doors.
Also collected by a call-in basis by calling DPS at 837-6900.

Asphalt, concrete & other masonry rubble

Scrap metal

Items NOT Collected:

  • Old cars, car bodies & car batteries
  • Chemicals and wet/ liquid paint
  • Explosives
  • Dead animals
  • Loose soil & sod

How to dispose of Cardboard and Boxes

  • Boxes are not to be used as containers.

  • Whole boxes and large cardboard is collected monthly on your heavy item collection day only.

  • You can recycle cardboard and boxes on your bi-weekly recycling day by flattening them and cutting to 3x3 feet or less.

  • Large moving boxes can be collected on a call-in basis by calling the DPS at 837-6900.

  • Cardboard and boxes of any size can be dropped off at the Midland Area Recycling Center, Call (989) 631-1668 for more information.

 

Heavy Item & Brush Preparation tips:

  • Put heavy items & brush into clearly separated piles.
  • Avoid poles, hydrants, trees & wires.
  • Never put items in the street.
  • All items, brush & brush piles must be less than 8 feet in length.

Items must be placed at the curb by 8:00 am Monday to ensure collection.  Collection for each area will begin on Monday and will continue until completed within that week.
Area A:  First Monday of every month. Area C:  Third Monday of  every month.
Area B:  Second Monday of every month. Area D:  Fourth Monday of every month.

Special Collection Services, call (989) 837-6900

Borrow-A-Container:  A 4x6 foot dumpster can be reserved for overnight loading.  Available Monday - Friday, a container is placed on either your outlawn or driveway approach before 3:30 pm and collected the following day.  Friday reservations may load over the weekend for Monday pickup.  There is no charge, however the containers must be reserved in advanced.  Due to disposal regulations, containers can be filled with either brush OR refuse, but not both.

Appliance Pick-up:  Appliances & moving boxes can be collected on a call in basis
